I did a thesis in college a 'while' ago, late 80s.. and this is a periphral to your question. I am not directly answering your question as to the most common injury.. However, the answer I have was somewhat surprising.. to a certain extent.. Now, this is based on US High schools, that play football, basketball, baseball and hockey..
High School Football had more sports related deaths than the other three combined,, Football also had twice as many 'permanent' injuries as the other three combined..
Baseball came in second with the number of 'permanent' injuries.. followed by hockey and then basketball.. Hockey did have more sports related deaths than baseball over the study's five year period (off the top of my head is was 1984 to 1989) and Hockey was also second to football in paraylsis injuries.. (basketball had none in the cities where the study was done)
