I just received an email from Yahoo!mail which said I have won $500 but requires me to remit $8.95 - is this the real thing?
I need to know, please, before I plunk down the cash to some scammer. Thanks/David

First "tell" of a scam:
Get a whole bunch of money for so much more money.

Here's the gimmick:
Someone CLAIMS they have a whole bunch of money. It could be in form of lottery tickets; envelope (bag, luggage, whatever) filled with tons of cash; check.
They offer you the cash, or to split it with you, if you perform an act of "faith" or goodwill. (Ie, you hold all the money; but, give us a smaller amount of cash).

The trick:
lottery ticket numbers are a previous day's numbers.
The envelope you saw filled with money disappears, leaving you with an empty envelope.
Many tricks end up causing the money to suddenly disappear.

The results:
In this case, you send $8.95, undoubtedly with a CC or debit card, or check.
They use the info YOU sent them, and deplete your account.

What to do:
DONT assume "Its only $8.95".
DON'T give it a try.
DO send the email to Yahoo.
DO alert the authorities.
DONT FALL for the gimmicks.

Watch the movie House of Games (Maybe House of cards) starring Joe Mantgna. Shows many scams. A REAL eye-opener.
Great educational movie. And, a good movie too.

Yeah, Yahoo make their money by just randomly giving it away to people. Doesn't it concern you that they're willing to pay you $500, but they need $8.95? Come on, son, you're not that stupid are you? Tell them to make the cheque out for $490, and they can keep the change as a thank you.

Sounds strange to me!!! Tell them to deduct the $8.95 from the $500 and send you the balance!
