A torrent is a file type (.torrent) which is used for downloading files over a BitTorrent peer-to-peer (P2P) network.

Servers host these torrent files which you download and open in a BitTorrent client. Clients are free to download, and you simply install them, then when you click on a torrent link on a website that hosts the torrents, it will load into your client.

The client then connects to other computers of people who are also downloading the files and takes chunks of the files from them. In a similar way, once you have some of the file, your client will start sending chunks of it to other people.

That's a very basic explanation of what a torrent is, and how the BitTorrent P2P network works.

There are some references for you in the source articles below. Hopefully they'll be of interest to you. I hope I've answered your question.

Torrents are basically links to files that you can download such a music, movies, etc. However, these files are usually illegal and, therefore, I would advise you to stay away as you can get arrested, sued, fined or just in big legal trouble.
