i believe obiwan knew what the future may hold and he left anakin alive because he had "A New Hope". Remember in Episode IV he allows Anakin to kill him because it will make Luke more of a Jedi and ultimately redeem Anakin. George had this well thought out. Except for the crazy yakking in Episode 1!!!!

Because Obi wan deep down didnt want to kill ANAKIN since he loved him like a brother and prob thought that him being so badly injured he would die after a bit .which in of itself was cruel Obi wan and Anakin have had run ins other times in which they had to kill to stay alive. The question no one asks s why was it that when ANAKIN TOLD Obi Wan "do not underestimate his powers and OBI Wan said "DONT TRY IT ANAKIN I HAVE THE HIGH GROUND" Darth Maul had the high ground too and got the Sith beat out of him, lol. The saddest thing about that whole battle was the fact Jedi's have so much power and abilites and it was even used in the movies.

Are you Scottish?
Star Warrs!
and although I'm not a fan of the movies - maybe obi didn't kill anakin because he wasn't a murderer.

Well. Jedi hold the protection of life above all. I`m sure Obi thought about how this guy was like a son to him too. ( as they ain't allowed relationships he couldn`t have a real son).
Obi assumed that anakin would die from his wounds. Left him to die rather than kill him hisself.

It's because Obi Wan loved Anakin like a brother and couldn't bring himself to deliver the killing blow. So he took Anakin's sabre and left him to his anger.

1. Obi-wan was a good guy and didn't want to kill his former friend. Besides, he didn't need to anyhow. Obi-wan figured Anakin wouldn't survive his injuries and the lake of fire he was lying next too and left him for dead. Too bad the movie sucked though...

with the sanctity of life point-of-view of the jedi, if Obi-wan was to kill Anakin as he was (on death's door, burned-up etc) then it would have been out of hate or anger, which as everyone knows is the path to the dark side.
Plus he'd get all dirty scrambling down all that ash and debris. Robes don't just wash themselves you know.

Obi didn't want to kill Anakin in the first place. He walked away thinking that Anakin had forced him to kill him. He didn't think that the Emporer would come along and save him

He obviously thought that Anakin was going to die, and so he left him there to die a slow death.
unfortunately (for Obi-wan, not the viewers), the Emporer found him and saved his life.
