An autistic savant (historically described as idiot savant) is an autistic person with Savant Syndrome. Savant Syndrome describes people with both a severe developmental or mental handicap and extraordinary mental abilities not found in most people. The Savant Syndrome skills involve striking feats of memory and often include arithmetic calculation and sometimes art or music. Look it up in Wikipedia and read about it. There are varying degrees of Savant Syndrome. Did you see the movie "Rain Man" with Dustin Hoffman and Tom Cruse. A 1988 Academy Award Film. Dustin played the part of a Savant. The story is based on a Savant that lives in Salt Lake City, Utah. He is one who needs help dressing and brushing his teeth etc. His father is devoted to him. He can read both pages of a book at the same time. He reads one page with one eye and the other page with the other eye. This is absolutely true. You need to do some research on the subject. It is so very very interesting. Some need help getting dressed, not all, some are functional but have a mind like a computer. You need to learn about them. I have heard there are only about 100 of them in the world. Scientists are doing research, hoping to find more about how their brain works. Einstein is thought to be a functional Savant. There was a 2 hour show on Savant Syndrome just last night.

Savant is french and means a person who has intellectual capacities beyond normal ("Il est un savant") however, in english it is used differently and usually associated with the term "idiot savant" such as pictured in the movie Rain Man. But the etymology (in french) is for a person with wide knowledge and intelligence. The word "savant" is a derivative of "savoir" (noun) which means "knowledge". Oddly enough, the english language often uses french words the wrong way, a good example is "entrée", in the USA you get a main course, in France you will get an appetizer, also an "entrée" is an entrance which makes more sense in its culinary meaning, the first course, the "door" to the meal. The opening of the meal.
