A great book for me is the one that inspires new practical ideas or understanding of life with excellent narrative, realistic characters, few or none of unnecessary rude words, and with fantastic phrases to remember.

when im looking for a book, i try to get a thicker book thats plain, so you dont really have an idea of what its about, read the first 25 pages youll probably get into it, i personally like books about castles, the haulacost, wars. i think to say wow, that was a great book, you had to enjoy the book once you got into it.when you get dissapointed that you finished the book because you still wanted to read it. you know that was a good book.

Where the plot isn't predictable, and where the story can just take you to another place. It has to have good writing qualities, and have realistic characters. I repeat the plot thing as well, because so often everything is predictable, and a story where you can't guess what's next gives it an untouchable edge.

Does it flow, do the characters and situations mesh, does the writer know what he/she is talking about? Is the book long enough, but not too long?

Convoluted language, and no time wasted developing a plot, since they've all been done before.
