To become a professor, you usually will be required to have a Ph.D., although there are some with only master's degrees. In addition to having the required degrees, a good professor should understand his subject thoroughly, and get to know his students and their needs.

A Ph.D generally takes about two years of course work, followed by researching and writing a dissertation on your principal area of study. Some dissertations can be completed in a year, some can take as many as seven years. I'd say that most often the dissertation takes about two years.

Regarding your final question, there are a few people who go directly from completion of their bachelor's degree to their doctoral studies, but they definitely constitute a small minority of doctoral students.

A professor in what? Where?

You can become a community college/junior college prof with a masters, but most colleges/universities require a Ph.D.

Most masters' programs take about 2 years, the Ph.D. longer - but it depends on the subject. For example, a physics Ph.D. takes approximately 6 years including the masters (after your undergrad degree).

Edit: chazzer is wrong - if he were right, some people would be professors before finishing high school, most before the end of college.

You need a doctorate degree. How long it takes depends on your university..some have a cutoff time of 5 years, some have no cutoff time. You can be an adjunct with a Masters, but you can't be a full professor without a doctorate. Usually, you can teach for like 3 or 4 years at a university with a Masters degree, but you have to be planning on getting a doctorate or working on it at that time.

There are several ways of going to being a medical doctor to becoming a medical professor. One is by traditional means, one is through political influence. The traditional one is go to the Dean of the medical school and have him/her recommend you. The other is to have someone in state government recommend you, the higher the office and the closer it is to the governor the better it is. Yet another that I thought about is to buy your way in to a teaching position in a medical school through your own or someone you know to give a very generous gift to thr medical school in exchange for a chair in the medical school that allows one to teach. Good luck.
