It can be from any one of the three.
The most common cause is related to mental and or psychological which would also come under the mental classification and could be caused by physical conditions.

An example would be if you have physical maladies, this could in turn cause a chemical inbalance in your system which may in effect promote insominia.

Here is a cure that does not require the use of drugs.
1. Improper breathing. Lack of adequate oxygen in your system.

Remedy: Learn to breath properly. Diaphramic breathing.
When breathing in, through the nose, draw the air in by pushing your stomach out. This pulls air in to fill your entire lungs. Always exhale thru the mouth. Babies are born knowing how to breath. Notice that their little tummies move up and down. This is diaphramic breathing. When you get up in the morning do some deep breathing exercises. Inhale to the count of 2, Hold to the count of 8, and exhale to the count of 4. Repeat this 9 times. You will start to feel great.

Remedy: Adequate water: Drink at least 8 glasses of water a day. 8 ozs per glass. Without enough water, your body has no way of flushing toxins and impurities from your system. Causing chemical inbalance, resulting is loss of sleep.

Do the above and you will notice a tremendous improvement in your health, your mental outlook, and a feeling of well being.

In addition, get plenty of exercise. Walking is fine. If you cannot get outdoors, try running in place. Best to exercise in the morning, as evening exercise will get the body wired up for action, and you will not sleep well.

Didn't mean to be so long but the above is important for your good health.

there can be many different reasons for laying awake, tossing and turning or just not getting asleep. Sometimes sleeping meds do work, but they tend to be addictive. It's better to try to find out why YOU can't sleep, and do something about the cause. It might take some serious looking at your emotional and behavioral patterns, but if you are real honest to yourself you will find out what is keeping you awake. There are sleeping treatments that modify your patterns of behavior that work really well. Not trying to make a point of it is a start... (and by the way, it's insomnia, not insomina). Good luck and sleep well, or do something you like or useful, if you can't sleep, and don't fuss about it. Fussing will keep you awake....

It can be due to either. Insomnia is a symptom of an underlying problem in most cases. I have been an insomniac for most of my life. Drugs don't cure insomnia, however there are many that treat it. I have found that the best way to deal with it is to find productive things to do while most of the world is sleeping.

Insomnia involves the mental primarily.. the thoughts seem to continue forever. Usually around negative aspects of your life or business. This non stop activity prevents one from going to sleep.. It becomes necessary to not only learn how to turn it off effectively but to prevent it from getting started. Is the reason it becomes imperative, if you are going to think.. find one item and ponder it... don't allow the mind to meander and find other things wrong with your one item.

Most of those things that keep us awake, should have been dealt with during the day.

Yes. All 3. Sleep medication can help you break an overlong episode of sleeplessness. You do depend on it to knock you out because it is so easy. So not a cure and could lead to abuse.

insomnia is all 3 and nothing drug related cures insomnia, it doesn't work like that. Only behavior modification can really cure it..like getting better sleep hygiene, etc.

I think it's boh mental and physical (psychological fits under mental). When I'm under a lot of stress, I have trouble sleeping. When I had surgery, I had trouble sleeping. I took melatonin and it helped me sleep.

Drugs work on the "sleep control center", but it really doesn't take care of insomnia
