Is it really an obvious fact?
How many international laws has Bush violated in the last 6 years? How many national laws? How many laws have members of his administration broken?
How many laws have the White senators and representatives in Congress broken?
How many laws have white collar Whites such as the Enron executives Lay, Fastow, and Skilling broken?
Also, how many Blacks have been wrongfully arrested, wrongfully convicted, and wrongfully imprisoned or executed?
Nothing is necessarily obvious.

Stereotype: A conventional, formulaic, and oversimplified conception, opinion, or image.
I guess If I could choose one of the words above to describe what you asked, it would be "over simplified conception".
There is no denying there are far too many young black men and women caught up in gang lifestyles. And since it has already been pointed out to you the large number of other nationalites who participate in gangs and you had no interest in knowing or seeking out that truth before asking a question, then I am left to ponder if gangs and crime are really concerns for you .. OR rather blacks in general your focus.
Having said that , an intelligent conversation regarding gangs , the motivation, who and why people participate in them may be a good topic for discussion. In order to do that one would need to be open minded and have researched the facts.
On the other hand it is futile and too labourious to discuss such a serious topic with those whose opinions are prejudiced.
Prejudice: An adverse judgment or opinion formed beforehand or without knowledge or examination of the facts.
A preconceived preference or idea.
The act or state of holding unreasonable preconceived judgments or convictions.

I don't think Blacks commit more crimes than any other race.....do you have a source for stats on that somewhere? I think the Hispanics may be catching up and the Whites may be not far behind. Oh, and although not technically a "crime", we can't forget the unthinkable things going on in our government that are leading to the things that are indirectly causing gang formation in the first place. Let's face it....we live in a society where the system has failed us miserably. And while I hate to answer a question with a question, I have to ask....who are the real criminals?

I believe there are a lot of factors for this type of behavior. One of which is black people in lower income areas (just as other races) have less access to opportunities than most others. Many do not have the proper foundation on how to succeed in life and thus find structure and discipline in the streets/gangs. Unfortunately, the gang's system of operating happen to be negative and often times illegal.

I don't see any gangs where I live!!
but I have heard on tv that more black people are in jail because of racism!!!
& that when white people do the same crime as a black guy
the black guy is more likely to be put in jail before the white guy.
I will agree that gangs are bad & they should be broken up
because no matter what race they would be quite scary to run into them!!!!

It really doesn't have much to do with race & it is more to do with economics. People in general join gangs I think as a way to achieve something they otherwise would not be able to, be it money, community, or safety. If there are a disproportionate number of a specific ethnicity joining a gang, it is probably because there is some other condition in a parallel disproportion. Not because of their race, but the opportunities and circumstances around them.

im hispanic, and i know that hispanics and blacks are more likely to join gangs because of the influence and somewhat oppresion that culture pushes on them, and please dont try telling me this is not true because it very much is. and obviously the are many cases, circumstances, and exceptions. A lot of both hispanic and black that are members are quite young and cant seem to get over that barrier stereotype barrier and oppresion, and self defeating barrier. It will take quite some time, just like it did with the irish but eventually and inevitably hispanics and blacks will rise above expectations.

I'll give a brief answer - joining a gang cures a sense of abandonment which exists due to not having stable parents around the household. Joining a gang is like joining a family where it is OK to take out anger on arbitrary people, places or things.

Pardon you! But your stupidity is showing. There are just as many gangbangers of other ethnicities as black. Maybe there are so many black gangbangers because they are historically downtrodden and misused. Look upo the facts. What is the average life span of a young black male? People like you should be trying to help instead of harm. Shame on you.

blacks are more likely to live in poverty.
if you look at the people who are living in poverty or just above the poverty line, they are more likely to commit crimes. some of these especially the males are in gangs.
a lot of people in gangs feel like no one cares about the poverty situation where they are from, like that cops don't care what happens in their neighborhoods or that they can't even trust the cops to help them fight crime in the area so they just take matters in their on hands. so they decide they will find other ways to get buy.
this explains why more blacks are in gangs, there are more in poverty which can lead to crimes against society.
