The first problem to overcome is my problem: not enough info. What type of computer is it? If Windows, keep reading. If Mac, the answer is very different and much simpler. Was any new hardware added to or removed from inside the computer recently? Does the power actually go off or does the screen just go black and the power is still on? After pressing the power button, how long is the time before the power goes off -- one second, ten seconds, one minute?
If the screen is going black but the power is still on, it is probably a problem with the video software. This is a common issue with Windows computers although you may meet someone who has used Windows for ten years and never had the problem. Boot into Safe Mode. Usually press F8 at startup until you see the Windows startup options screen. Then select Safe Mode.
If the power goes off in less than two seconds, it is likely a problem with hardware. The two most likely suspects are a dead (I mean totally dead) CMOS battery or the processor. First, replace the battery (looks like a watch battery but larger, maybe the size of a quarter (U.S. coin)-- about 2-3 CM across. Make a careful note of the side of the battery position. Put the new battery back in correctly as far as "+" side of the battery.
If that doesn't fix it, get an expert to reseat the processor. Don't try to learn how to do this by yourself as the processor is expensive and a bit fragile.
If the power goes off at 5-10 seconds, it may be something odd in the BIOS settings. Press the delete key repeatedly just after pressing the power button. That should open the BIOS screen. I'm not in front of a Windows computer just now but look for an option to reset defaults. That could get things going. If it still has the problem, shut down and remove that CMOS battery for 20 minutes and then put it back correctly.
If the power actually does go off just as Windows begins to load, it could be the Blaster Worm. That's a whole long other solution.
