Why do republicans/christians/homophobes like to compare gay love to the "love" between a grown man and a young child? Or the "love" between a person and an animal? They think that if they legalize gay marriage they would have to legalize these to? Why? they're nothing like gay love, because in a gay relationship both partners want to get married and love eachother. Petaphiles manipulate the children into loving them, and when the child grows up they're totally messed up. And with animals...well the animal has no idea what the hell is going on and since when can an animal sign a marriage contract? Come on people get smart and let my friends get married damnit!

Because they're ignorant. You hear of so many heterosexuals who are child molesters. Have any of the republicans watched Dateline lately? They're constantly busting heterosexual men who are soliciting young women. I think they know that homosexuals are not child molesters or freaks. They just know that there are a lot of ignorant voters out there that want to hear negative things about homosexuals.

I think it's because their first rebutall was the "sanctity of marriage act" and when they realized it's unconstitutional to put a discrimination clause in the constitution that wasn't gonna go over well. Also, the separation of church and state issue. So, they had to find another principle to build their case on. It's all just a bunch of lame excuses if you ask me. However, the one thing I WILL say that they could still use is that if you allow gay marriage between two consenting adults who want to get married, the group of people who probably WILL argue against that, would be the Mormons, because they are polygamists, and would we have to make exceptions for marriage of a man to more than one wife? What if theyr'e all adults who consent to marriage too?

One of the funniest things I ever read was an article by Dr. Dobson (head of Focus on the Family, an anti-gay "Christian" group centered in Colorado Springs, the people who organized the ex-gay movement): 11 reasons why gay marriage should not be legalized. (Why 11? Such a strange number).
One of his 11 points was that the US financial situation is on such shaky ground that if gay marriage was legalized and gay spouses were entitled to social security benefits and stuff like that, it'd be the last straw and the US would be bankrupt. If there are so many of us that social security benefits or income tax credits will be more of a strain on our budget than the freaking war, there must be millions of us! We should totally get together and march on Washington!!! (Meanwhile, these same people argue that we're a much smaller percentage of the population than many polls seem to indicate. Are there a lot of us, or just a few? Make up your minds, people!)
Another of his points was that if gay marriage was legalized, polygamy would be next, then people would be allowed to marry their dogs, then people would be allowed to marry their armchairs. I think this is superfunny because it implies that letting someone marry their La-Z-Boy is worse than gay marriage (like, gay marriage might be okay...if it didn't lead to THAT!).

The bigger picture is as follows:
If gay marriage is legalized it will demonstrate that it is possible for a very small minority in society (lets say 5%) to legalize and make legitimate their sexual preference which society originally considered deviant.
So, if gays can accomplish this huge political and cultural victory in a period of about 30 years then why couldn't pedophiles or "animal lovers" do the same thing in the next 30 years?
Hang with me - I'm being serious here: Pedophiles would not start by announcing that they are pedophiles. No - they would lobby to gradually reduce the age of concent based on arguments like 1) kids are having sex anyway in high school, 2) girls are getting pregnant anyway, so 3) we need to de-criminalize behavior that is already common-place, yada, yada, yada. Or they would try to eliminate the difference between rape and statuatory rape, etc.
I'm not taking sides, but I can recognize that a triumph for one sexual special interest group is a triump for all.
