Happy to note your interest in practical chemistry...and this is a fun thing!
Usually sodium silicate solution is used...'water glass'...used widely to seal the pores in eggs.
Tiny crystals of various soluble metal salts are simply dropped in, and the silicate formed 'grows' into twigs, ferns, and like shapes, the color being determined by the metal ion...beautiful, multi-hued 'forests' can be made this way.
Look up the constants for the various silicates to find the color produced by each metal ion.
All reagents can be obtained at a lab supply house; water glass probably can be found at a farm-supply house or hardware store in a farming area; your druggist may help in finding some metal salts.

Good luck, and have fun. :-))
