As a nurse I am all for it. Too many times have I seen someone in the hospital for weeks just slowly dying, only being kept alive by machines and the wishes of family members. When I am old and I am hospitalized I say bring on the morphine and let me go.

The pro of course is that the person can be spared what they know could be a very long and painful death, and their loved ones can be spared from having to witness it. The cons are what is left after they have gone.The doctor who carries out the euthanasia,will break the Hippocratic oath. Even although he knows he is authorised to do so,he has in some peoples`eyes (maybe even his own as well )commited murder.May be the doctors are religious, and cannot reconcile their conscious.
The patient would discuss what they wanted with their family,but those who agreed with the decision at the time, may not feel the same at a later date.The massive guilt felt by someone who has had a loved pet put to sleep,is enormous.Imagine what it would be like if it was your loved one.

People with terminal illness who decide that they want to end their life should be allowed to without others debating it or getting involved. After all, the person who wants to end their life is the one that is going through the pain and suffering. Yes -you would not allow you pet to go through the pain and suffering- so why should an adult who wants to end their life not be allowed to do so?
