A great way to be thoroughly honest with yourself about,a) a problem, b) where you're going in life,c) just ventilating without feeling you're dumping on your friends too much. It's also where you can write about dreams, about the wonderful things you want to happen, the funny and joyful things that have happened. It doesn't have to be every day, just when you feel like it. As we grow, so do our perceptions of things, and also, how we deal with stresses, even some of our values, change and modify.
Writing a diary isnot just really useful to get any negative or confusing things out of our minds, but if we look back and read them a few years' later, we laugh, we ask ourselves, "Was that me? Did I really think like that? Why was I worried about that little thing?" We can see how we have matured.
But most of all, it's a way to find our identity, to know we're not alone, to write and think as we write all the things we are bothered about. As we write, by the time we've finished, often we 've somehow worked out the problem/stress on the way. We've achieved something.

I kept a diary for five years during adolescence and found it very helpful to be able to express my feelings unreservedly. It also had the effect of registering daily events very clearly in my mind, so that nowadays I have a particularly clear recall about what occurred over those years. Unfortunately, my mother found and read my diaries and I resolved not to keep a diary any more. Ironically my life became far more interesting in the ensuing years, but there it is, I have no contemporary record of day to day events.
I wonder about great people who keep diaries. Are they really doing so with a view to publishing their memoirs by and by? That means that they would have to be a little more restrained and a little less candid than those of us who write for our own gratification!

A diary is a very sensible way of recording even your most uninteresting thoughts and is of course a good reminder of any special events. Although it may now be of no particular interest to yourself, in years to come it could become a most cherished family possession. I still have my late Mothers diary which details many mundane events with some interesting thoughts of the day. It is a great keepsake and a personal reminder of a very loving person.

I think its fine, I have kept a diary for most of my life and will continue to do so as long as I can, good to read about things you'd forgotten and nice to relive those memories too.

I've never done it myself, but I imagine it's a very meaningful thing to do for the person writing.I guess there's some sentimental value in it too...unlike blogs, which are often completely narcissistic, boring and seldom read by anyone.
