i have been raising alligators for over 35 years, they will grow 6 inches per year from ave,12 inch hatchling size until they hit about 6 feet then the growth slows to a few inches a year.they will outgrow whatever you put them in.i have never had one less than 10 foot.if you are considering getting one you can e-mail and i'll help you with any questions you may have, for your sake and the gators.the people who answer the ?'s here on gator's have no idea what the hell they are talking about.

Alligators will outgrow an environment that becomes too small for them if they are kept properly. It will just reach a point where it will look like it needs an larger enclosure and you will have to change it or the animal will get out of it. A glass tank is no place for an Alligator. **Message for jgmafb that posted on this. You shouldn't refer to people as stupid (directly or indirectly) when they are simply trying to help. By the way, you posted your facts wrong ~ Alligators will grow 12 inches a year for the first few years from a 6 inch hatchling. Not the opposite like you had stated. Thanks, Leo

Hello
Good Lord no... Alligators will keep right on grrowing. Last week I just had to go into a guys house and remove a 4 foot gator he had kept as a pet that had turned mean..
Imagine that a gator kept in a house as a pet turning mean on its owner??!!
He had him since hatchling... fed him chicken, and moved him to the basment with a pool and lighitng once he was too big for the tank... But oh yes he was a stinker that one.. Maaaaad..
Can you blame him
He is now in a zoo waiting for a permanent home
Its also illegal in Wisconsin to have Alligators
I would URGE you to NOT get an alligator, crocodile or caiman as a pet... they are not pets.
I would also suggest you check ordinances where you live,, because if they are illegal to have and you get caught the fines are huge and can include jail time.
This young man will be paying around 5000 in fines and up to 6 mos jail time .. and it could be more once they are done with him.
Consider your decision wisely to get a gator... but to answer your question ...
They will grow right out of a tank..
Keeping them in a tank is mean.. they need more room even as babies.
ADDED+++++++
Also any Actual legit responsible Alligator Farmer would not advise to keep on as a pet... and any personal Friend of the Irwins would never post such a thing out here using it to better thier own post let alone claim to have gotten a gator from them.. I am not even going to go into how wrong that it to do... and if the situation were different Id let them know as Im certain Terri or Bob would Not appreciate it! But I feel bothering th em about this right now is not appropriate .. maybe another staff member can take apeek at the postings instead...
SO sir who is wanting a gator.. I would not take advice from the alligator farmer!! I doubt he's legit and if he is I doubt any where near as legit as he wants to sound!
Good Luck

It seems again that our education system has failed to provide basic concepts of science. If it were such a case that an animal beit reptile or mammal would conform to the space of its environment then with this same logic wouldnt an alligator from the Everglades then grow to the same size of the Everglades? Just because aunt Betty seems as though she can grow no larger than the couch she has been sitting on non-stop for the last 5 years, doesnt mean that if you were to somehow stuff her into a smaller box each week she would begin to lose weight, things just dont work that way with animals.

Yes, it make take a few years but soon you will have a very large and dangerous alligator. My mom's friend had a baby gator they found in the everglades, and took it up here and kept it in their basement. In 10 years the thing was so huge it outgrew the wading pool they had for it, and it ate tons. It was extremely dangerous and they eventually had to give it to a zoo. Not a good pet.

the length of the man animal isn't tormented by technique of that aspect. the length of descendant persons below some situations might want to modify over the generations by using organic decision. as an get mutually, island populations of mice and rats can strengthen in body length by using a shortage of predators, and the consequent lack of usefulness in darting right down to flee by ability of small gaps and crevices. commonly large-sized mammals can shrink over the generations, as an version to the decrease availability of nutrition. Mediterranean islands replaced into residing house to dwarf elephants of about large-dogs length. What can be a aspect with the length of human being alligators is nutrition availability.

honistly if you have to ask a question like this then you are not ready to keep one yourself.... the gentlemen a few posts above with the gator farm should have known that.
im not going to say do or dont get anything but realise that a gator is a serious finantial commitment... expect to spend well over 2 grand in houseing when he is an adult.

No they continue to grow their entire lives as do all reptiles, only fish are influenced by the size of the relative habitat.

Yes. Most reptiles do.
EX:The smaller the aquarium the smaller the gator.
The bigger the aquarium the bigger the gator.
This is because their body usually becomes immune the the size of their habitat.
