I love a good discussion with many differing opinions. As I remember my engine exhaust theory, the ideal vehicle exhaust (downstream from the exhaust manifolds/headers) system has no back pressure or a slight vacuum. Any impediment to the flow of air in or out of an engine decreases power. I assume the previously mentioned "needs back pressure" actually means that the primary exhaust passageways must be small enough to maintain the velocity of exhaust gases exiting the engine. Remember an exhaust system is designed to work in association with the engine mechanicals, the fuel management system and the computerized ignition system. If you lost a muffler which was "tuned" (built to combine fluid mechanics and acoustical science to optimize exhaust flow) the horsepower will decrease. If the muffler was causing excessive back pressure, dropping it in the street will increase horsepower.
I would follow the other's advice. Get a replacement muffler-borrow the money from grandma.

Yes you will, because you will loose exhaust velocity. Exhaust velocity can only be achieved when your engine has the correct amount of back pressure. In side your exhaust system the exhaust gases reach a point weir it will start to actually suck out the exhausted gases from the engine and then push it out of the exhaust system. this work's better for two stroke engines but it also works for four stroke engines as well but knot the the same extent. So as a result of you loosing your muffler your car will have less gas mileage and less horse power. you can try a junk yard you can put any thing on as long as the piping is the same size. how ever you will have to weld on new mounts. but a muffler shop can also put on a new muffler two for about a hundred dollars.

I'd listen to D R since he really seems to know what he's talking about. Also, not having a muffler on your car could earn you a nice fix it ticket from a police officer and end up costing you more money down the road. Your best bet is to borrow the money from someone and get a new muffler now.

yes you will lose HP because a muffler has chambers in it which create a path for the air to get to the tailpipes and out of the exhaust. without your mufflers you are going to create more backpressure (a motor needs some backpressure but too much will bog down your motor). the air wont escape correctly. it will be pushing back into the motor.....the more cold and clean air you get into your motor the more HP, but the motor needs to be able to push that air out as fast as you are acceling. If you dont really mash the gas then you wont notice a HP difference, but if you go full throttle you will notice. i hope this helped you out....it is my best way of explaining it in a way that everyone would understand, hopefully....well get a muffler...and these other people are right, depending on where you live you could get a ticket for noise pollution

You will lose no hp but you may gain some power due to loss of back pressure but you also may be targeted for the anti-noise law
