The question is more like, how can a country with say 1,000 years of architectural and cultural history fall so far behind a country with 200?
What were they doing for 800 years? For that matter, what were they doing for the past 200 years?

Well claiming is very diffrent then that being fact. But a culture with 1000 years of history can or can not be better in the way of superority. Take the Carthaginians and Romans. The Phonecians came to the city of Carthage and started to build more and more cities in diffrent places but after the Phonecian civilation fell in about 1147BC the cities where near Carthage became an empire. The city of Carthage had been around for about 1000 years but the Romans had been around since 753BC. In the Punic wars Rome proved to be better and more advanced. But a country with longer history isn't stronger then one with say 200 years of history. Becasue such things as rebellions or invasions can weeken a country that has been around for so long.

There are many countries in the world with architectural and cultural histories of more than 1000 years and not one of them can lay claim to any sort of superiority, just lots of history and experience. For nations just as for individuals the rule of arrogance applies. That is there is nothing other than chance that separates you in your ivory tower from the others in the mud. The main difference is you have better bathrooms!

Any country's claim to superiority of any kind could only be based on its achievements in the last 50 years at the most, maybe only the last 30. No matter how great its achievements were before that, if it hasn't been able to keep them up, they're just history.

Cultural history and architecture do not make a country superior. IMHO, the things that make a country superior are the amount of freedom and opportunity that a country gives to each one of its citizens.

Interesting question.....
But first you have to establish what exactly makes one superior...what exactly is the criteria for being superior?
Longevity,military,wealth,art......?
I believe each and every culture have made that claim thru out history.
One thing is true though...All that have claimed it....have not endured the test of time, it seems nothing lasts forever...regardless of their alleged superiority.

You can claim anything. Superiority is relative and in the eye of the beholder.
