Vampire bats are common to the American Southwest and central america, and one can assume eastern europe to some extent.

Dracula and the bats are bound by their thirst for blood., as to his ties to the Wolf, that could be a crossing of myths with the werewolf tales, and in some versions of Dracula, casting him as a shape shifter

I am familiar with vampire bats as I served in the Peace Corp in South America. Deep in a wild area called the Chaco in Paraguay, there is abundant wildlife. The sky is so beautiful at night with the stars it is almost like a drug trip. It is also alive with vampire bats! They are basically harmless to most of us, but I would be careful with infants...just in case. And of course they do carry diseases but so do those cute raccoons you seen all over the USA. And yes, they do nip at livestock and farmers must protect their chickens but the superstitious fears surrounding them are unfounded. They are a fine animal like any other.
As for Dracula, he really should not be associated with any innocent animal...he tortured and murdered people by the hundreds...he did exist but was not metaphysical as is often portrayed. He was just an awful, sick sadistic serial killer who should have been stopped.

In South America and parts of Africa you can find Vampire bats. As for Dracula, there was such person. he was based on A Slavic War Lord that would cut off the enemies heads and put them on a pole. I can't remember the first name ,but the last was the impaler.

While much of the world sleeps, vampire bats emerge from dark caves, mines, tree hollows, and abandoned buildings in Mexico and Central and South America. They glide stealthily through the night air as they search for food.

Like the legendary monster from which they get their name, these small mammals drink the blood of other animals for survival. They feed on blood from cows, pigs, horses, and birds. Though uncommon, vampire bats even occasionally bite humans for blood.

Rather than sucking blood, vampire bats make a small cut with their teeth and then lap up the flowing blood with their tongues. These bats are so light and agile that they are sometimes able to drink blood from an animal for more than 30 minutes without waking it up. The blood sucking does not hurt the animal.

Vampire bats have special adaptations to help them with their unique feeding needs. Unlike some other species of bats, vampire bats can walk, run, and jump. They have very strong hind legs and a special thumb that helps them take off after feeding. Also, heat sensors on their noses help them find a good spot on an animal’s body to feed.

What happens if vampire bats don’t get their nightly meal? If they can’t find blood for two nights in a row, they will die. Luckily, female bats can be generous. Well-fed bats will often regurgitate blood to share with others, in exchange for grooming. Female bats in captivity seem especially friendly toward new mothers. After a baby is born, other bats have been observed feeding the mother for about two weeks after the birth.

Are vampire bats really that scary? Even though bat bites themselves aren’t harmful, vampire bats can spread a disease called rabies. This disease hurts farmers’ livestock, especially cattle herds. However, vampire bats can actually be quite tame, and even friendly to humans. In fact, one researcher reported that he had vampire bats that would come to him when he called their names.

There are vampire bats. So called as they literally suck blood from livestock and other animals. They are found all over the world.

Dracula was associated with night time attacks, just as bats and wolves are nocturnal animals.
