My son is now 9 1/2 mos and has been pulling himself up to a standing position for about a month now. My problem is that he loves chewing on his crib. He uses his teeth to scrape the paint off. Whenever i pick him up from the crib, his mouth is speckled with white dots. What do i do? btw, its one of those wooden cribs painted white.

i use a wooden crib when we are out of the bedroom. in the bedroom, where we use the playpen type, i've got no problem about paint but he still eats the edge.

he does this constantly, even if he had just finished eating or drinking a full bottle of milk.he quickly tires of any toy i give him and resumes gnawing on the crib.

I have teething guards on my crib. They are just plastic rails that go across the rails and when he chews on it, it's just plastic. You can get them at just about any store with a baby department.

Is it an old crib? If it is, the paint could be lead based and you should stop using the crib immeidately and let your doctor know what's been going on.

Is it a new crib? If so, after, again, stopping use of the crib immediately, I would contact the company who manufactured it and complain until something is done about it. Every child who has ever slept in a crib long enough to stand up, has chewed on the rails. Anyone responsible for manufacturing cribs should know enough to know that whatever they use to cover the crib (paint, stain, etc.) needs to be able to withstand a child chewing on it without the substance flaking. If the crib is new and the paint is flaking, the manufacturer should replace the crib or refund your money.

Either way... stop using the crib immediately! Teething rails are only good for the rails. It is still possible that your son can chew on other parts of the crib and still ingest the paint. Even if the paint does not include lead, eating it could still be very dangerous for him!

Just a note... I asked my husband what he would do in your situation. He said that we would stop using the crib immediately and get the baby straight to the doctor.

Good luck.

I thought that they just sold these teething rings in any store, but I could be wrong. Have you tried to call the manufacturer of the crib?

There are plastic pieces that can be purchased to put on the edge of the crib, please make sure that the paint does not contain lead -- sorry to be a worry wart, but my husband is a lead inspector and children love the taste of lead paint! -- Please check with someone in your area to be sure the paint doesn't have lead in it...
