How true was this concept then and is it true today?

"We hold these truths to be self-evident: That all men are created equal. That they are endowed by their creator with certain inalienable rights. That among these are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness."

The Declaration of Independence says, basically, "we believe it's obvious that everyone is created the same." They declared themselves free and independent states because the King of England refused to accept those basic principles and in so doing, lost his right as Sovereign to govern the colonies.

It was true then and it's true now. It's only after we're born that others attempt to divide us into groups by some arbitrary classification. I personally believe that any discrimination, including affirmitive action, is wrong because it seeks to differentiate people by man-made standards.

It's sad that many who profess to believe in the Declaration of Independence and the US Constitution are in favor of denying the most basic right - the right to life - to the most vulnerable human beings:the unborn.

"It is a poverty to decide that a child must die so that you may live as you wish."

They wrote it with the hope that the people of the nation would realize the simplicity of the statement. It is true, but has never been practiced, understood or appreciated. Even while writing the Declaration people were being enslaved, natives were being slaughtered and locked up, women were not treated or thought of as equals. It was and still is the WASPS that control and dominate our society. We had the 3/5th agreement for slaves ( which was later amended but does not erase the fact we allowed our constitution to recognize blacks as less than a whole human), women could not vote, immigrants have always and will always be treated unfairly. We are a capitalist society which forces the inequality among the masses, between the haves and the have nots. To add the people who wrote the Declaration and the Constitution were not religious. That is a fallacy with a heavy slant to the side of why God needs to be involved in all we do. It is wrong, history has shown us this. I suggest people who believe we are one nation founded on one God do a little research. Everyone has an agenda even those who preach all humans are created equal.

I don't think that anyone can verify the "truth" of a "concept." It ought to be remembered that many of the men who signed the Declaration owned slaves. It ought to be remembered that the men who proposed and ratified the 14th Amendment ("No state shall ... deny to any person ... the equal protection of the laws.") wouldn't even let women vote on it.

To this day it is the case that the most HONEST (and cynical) slogan we ought to be using is the same one invented by George Orwell in his classic, "Animal Farm," ..... "All animals are equal, but some animals are more equal than others."

It was very true in it's original meaning. This was that we are all born with the right and the ability to achieve what what we want to.

Now....AFTER we are born is when things start to be different. It is up to us to WORK to acheive what we want and need. The saying does NOT mean that we all have to STAY equal forever. Those who work and achieve things will be able to supply things that they WANT....Those who do not work, should NOT be GIVEN things, just because those slackards WANT them!

All men are created equal. You are born naked and screaming. After that it's your job to make your life into what you want it to be.

\/ To that guy down there. Treated? How should people be forced to treat others? No one said everyone is going to be nice, deal with it. Don't make excuses.

I have a hard time saying all men are created equal when gays don't have the same rights as heterosexuals.

This statement in itself is false considering women didnt receive the right to vote for over a hundred years after that statement was passed.

Just another term to confirm the western belief of perfection in my opinion.

Something like that doesn't change over time. Whether they are treated equally is a different story.

Are we not all created equal? It's what happens AFTER we are created where the problem lies.
