I usually ask them personally what they would like to be referred as. I teach college-level psychology so we talk a bit about race, ethnicity, and culture in various lectures. I just take a vote amongst my black and latino students--what should I refer to your race as?

Most of the black students seem uncomfortable with the term "African-American" and want to be referred to as just "Black". Most of the Latino students opt for "Latino".

That having been said, if you are writing a scholarly paper, you're best off sticking with the term "African-American".

Jasmine: why do you have to refer to them by their color or ethnic orgin. If I seen my friends and said, "Oh, there is my white blond friend." and then she says; "there is Jasmine my black afro=American friend." Do you think we do that?
Why is Americans so strung out on skin color?
Get over it everyone can't be an ebony princess and have this copper color. By the way God has a copper color the bible says.
