Sometimes I will go in these spurts where I will feel just awful about myself! For no particular reason. Maybe it is chronic depression? How do you get out of these funks?

Dear xamino_grrix,

Have you done any aerobics lately?
This is not just "low self-esteem" !!! Read below w/an open mind.

This may not sound radical but, take a 20-30 minute brisk walk or use a cross-trainer etc. (to increase your endorphin output into your bloodstream). The longer you do 'any' type of aerobic activity, the more endorphins will bath your body from the inside! Just doing these two things will take the edge off your feelings of depression, and yes what you're feeling is "mild" depression...not the suicidal type.

Unfortunately, the power of 'positive thinking' just dosen't cut it for these kind of funks. ****************GOOD LUCK******************

What things do you feel awful about? You either have to fix them or learn to accept them.

If it's really serious and beyond that, yeah, maybe professional help would be good. Talk to a councilor or start off just talking with a teacher or a friend who is willing to listen.

Stuff I do when I get in a funk is write in my journal. Get all the angry/sadness out there. And make a list of things I can do or set out to do to make myself feel better about myself.

Also, if I'm sad a trip to the store for a small shopping spree or a run at the gym or a bubble bath or a strech in the sun always makes me feel better.

The best way to avoid thinking too much about yourself is to focus your thoughts outward not inward..think about others and other situations, think about all the poor people in third world countries who will never have a chance at a "normal" life, think about all the sick people especially children with cancer and other devastating diseases that don't have a chance to feel well, thnk about volunteering with the less fortunate (soup kitchen or shelter,or Christian sharing center, battered women's shelter, senior citizen or nursing home) and also about those who cannot afford new clothes or food to eat or medicine for their children or themselves. It is all in your perspective, I know this sounds really corny but it's true there is always someone much worse off than yourself and you need to try and count whatever blessings you DO have! I promise that this will make you feel a little less depressed. There are so many people out there that have to cope with such horrible situations and somehow they survive, so we can too right?

Do something nice for another person. Smile at someone who looks sad. Say a few kind words to the check-out cashier. Help your spouse with an unpleasant chore. Take a meal to a friend who is sick. Send a card to an acquaintance. Volunteer for a worthy organization.

..if you can afford it go talk to a counselor... we all feel down once in a while but it is more serious when it interferes with your every day routine... dont let it go that far... its harder to pick yourself up when you have fallen that low.. if the depression is bad the counselor might suggest for you to see a psychiatrist .. there is nothing wrong with trying to help yourself and be happy..you feel stronger once you are doing something for YOU.... good luck..

When I feel this way, it always helps me to do something nice to myself- go for a walk, shower, go swimming (or other activities you enjoy), buy myself something nice (when I can afford it), do something nice for someone else, etc.

Being proactive always helps me boost my mood.
