In this election cycle the main montra I've heard from the Democratic party is that the Republicans need to be out becuase they turned a yearly surplus into a deficit. However, I have yet to hear one Democrat say how they would balance the budget or speak of their proposed legislation in the past 5 years to balance the budget.
The way I see it, the deficit has been a necessary evil. 9/11, Katrina and 2 wars have forced our budget to increase...our economy handed to us by Clinton and 9/11 forced the government to not cut any Federal programs, increase military spending and to lower taxes.
The Republican economic model has proven it's effectiveness, as seen by the booming economy. And the military spending cannot be lowered, with N Korea and Iran on the possible horizon. So what would the Democratic answer be to balance the budget? Will they raise or taxes or cut which Federal programs?

Ok, the early results say "taxes will be raised"...which will have ill effects on the economy. Which just perpetuates the governmental dependancy cylce they enjoy...makes sense to me.

It's interesting how the Democrat's are so hostile, yet can't say how they would balance the budget.

Since one person asked, go back and check your economic history. An economic boom happened in our country from March 1991 (President Bush and Reagan's policies), until March 2001 when the economy "peaked" and reached the beginning of a recession, with key economic indicators showing pending recession going back to Q4 of 2000.

Why would anyone brag about the government having a surplus? That means they are incompetent and are robbing the taxpayers by taking and keeping excess money. The government should only take the absolute minimum that they need and cut back on all necessary programs that are not specified in the constitution.
BTW: there was never a surplus anyway, not spending budgeted defense allocations is not the same as having a surplus.
But to answer the question... they will fall into their backup mode which is to raise taxes. That will cut the record revenues the treasury is recieving from taxes and cause a DECREASE in tax revenues. And cause investors to pull out of the market.
That will cause them to cut the defense allocations, which will cause the defense industries to suffer, further harming the economy. And increase unemployment by idling the defense industry and the industries that support it.

Your asking laymen to balance our budget (as if you even had a clue)? Kinda silly. Anyway, I'm not sure which Clinton economy you're referring to. It wasn't the 1 left by President Bill Clinton. The economy was doing great, by most standards, prior to GW.
This isn't coming from a Clinton supporter either. I didn't vote for him and actually had a poor opinion of the man during his administration. It's only in hindsight that I can compare him to our current Pres, and now I'd give anything to get a man like Bill back in office. You don't know what you got until it's gone. But hopefully what we've got now will get lost sooner rather than later.
As for your remark about Democrats and hostility, maybe you're new to Yahoo answers? You're throwing stones in glass homes (never a good idea). Read a bunch of the questions and posts put up by the Republicans and get back to me on your claims of hostility from the Dems.
---Regarding "check your history", economic indicators right now say our economy is doing quite well, but the average, middle class Joe tends not to agree. Economic indicators serve economic theory well, but in the real world they're often counter intuitive. In my line of work, small businesses are my bread and butter. My evaluation of the economy now and then is based on my personal financial strength and that of my clients, not Wall Street voodoo.

When Clinton got out of office, Bush inherited a $112 billion annual surplus (this is not the federal debt) which Bush has turned into a $300 billion annual deficit.
Does anyone even know what our national debt is and how much is spent on interest payments each year.?
Regarding the Democrats' proposed legislation in the past five years to balance the budget - when you have a single party government - the executive and legislative branches - that pretty much shuts down the opposition. Hopefully with a possible Democratic victory on Nov. 7 in at least the House of Representatives we will have a more balanced government. I would expect a whole bunch of proposals to come from the Democrats if they actually had any political power, which they have not had in the past five years.
In your last paragraph, you talk about federal spending and what programs will have to be cut, talking about defense spending. However, defense spending isn't the program we will have to worry about - try Medicare and Social Security. Those two programs alone have the power to bankrupt the U.S. unless something is done.

They have no plan for how. If they get back in power and can't balance the budget, their story is going to be "Well, we're doing all we can, but those Republicans just screwed everything up so badly it's going to take another term."
Just how things are. No one in politics takes responsiblity anymore. If they screw up, it's because the other party did it.

Democrats love to donate to the lazy and poor welfare people, so if they control the house, our taxes will go up to support the lazy.
