This is best answered with a senario:
Say that you are walking down a path, mostly straight, mostly flat, but with a few bumps and curves.
(while your family/parents/friends guide you)
You come upon a forked bit in the road.
(one's first challenge)
There are three roads now; one the same path. Another to your left is rocky, narrow, and spirals up a mountain, but there is the beauty of a sea shore on the end in the distance. To your right the path is shaded, straight, and clean, but what you don't see is the hole filled with spears waiting to impale you...
(Your choice; left, that of society; right, or staying safe; right down the middle.)
Which path to take? The one that will cause you to be hurt and tired? The same one you are on? Or the one that only apears safe?

Follow it! It's always changing, just as you are. I never "planned" my life. Sometimes the most unexpected things come knocking on your door that you'd never have dreamed of--also if you reach a fork in that path, let your intuition make your choice. There'll be another further on, you can count on it. I'd never want to know my future, because this sort of serendipity makes life so fascinating. Feel how you feel NOW & go with it. Look through open doors, be ready to change horses in mid-stream--it's fun.

As you cannot predict the future there is always a chance element no matter what you do. People often succeed because luck come their way whilst other fail despite their abilities. As there is no way of avoiding chance just make the decision you are most comfortable with as this will probably increase your chance of happiness which is really what we should be seeking.
People often succeed despite having no greater ability then others.

After fifty some odd years of living I have reached several conclusions.
One of those is, while I may have to do certain things because of obligations, I need to do what gives me purpose, meaning and fulfillment in my life. I can not, nor should anyone, live their life to meet the expectations of someone else.
Being honest with yourself and being true to yourself are the first steps to living a contented life.

Trial and error. You have to try many different things, don't be afraid to go far and wide, have a lot of experiences. When you are ready to find it, your path will be ring out to you.

I was hammered into it. Tried philosophy to get freedom, but it only makes you more wise to your subjection.
Additional of Oct 23 2006: What is 'hammered into it'. It is a metaphor or analogy for repetitive force applied to something that moves a thing into an other thing or reshapes a thing so that it is different with every application of the 'hammer', i.e. progressive transformation. Reason for metaphor: assuming freewill before consciousness and self-consciousness is, is an error. The assumption amounts to the acquivalent proposition 'we are born adults with adult formal operative cogniscience'.

"Stages of Cognitive Development. Piaget identified four stages in cognitive development:
Sensorimotor stage (Infancy). In this period (which has 6 stages), intelligence is demonstrated through motor activity without the use of symbols. Knowledge of the world is limited (but developing) because its based on physical interactions / experiences. Children acquire object permanence at about 7 months of age (memory). Physical development (mobility) allows the child to begin developing new intellectual abilities. Some symbollic (language) abilities are developed at the end of this stage.
Pre-operational stage (Toddler and Early Childhood). In this period (which has two substages), intelligence is demonstrated through the use of symbols, language use matures, and memory and imagination are developed, but thinking is done in a nonlogical, nonreversable manner. Egocentric thinking predominates
Concrete operational stage (Elementary and early adolescence). In this stage (characterized by 7 types of conservation: number, length, liquid, mass, weight, area, volume), intelligence is demonstrated through logical and systematic manipulation of symbols related to concrete objects. Operational thinking develops (mental actions that are reversible). Egocentric thought diminishes.
Formal operational stage (Adolescence and adulthood). In this stage, intelligence is demonstrated through the logical use of symbols related to abstract concepts. Early in the period there is a return to egocentric thought. Only 35% of high school graduates in industrialized countries obtain formal operations; many people do not think formally during adulthood. "
I was going to say operational conditioning of painful, pleasurable reactions to different sense pattern stimulus is the primary primeval preformer state of freewill, but that is an error in ethics; our ability to differentiate emotions from each other and their systemic organs are the most enabling knowable performers for personality differentiation, sense memory patterning and psychopathology.
