India (Hindī: भारत Bhārat), officially the Republic of India, is a country in South Asia. It is the seventh-largest country by geographical area, the second most populous country, and the largest democracy in the world. India has a coastline of over seven thousand kilometres[1] and borders Afghanistan [2] and Pakistan to the west; China, Nepal, and Bhutan to the north-east; and Bangladesh and Myanmar to the east. India is in the vicinity of the Indian Ocean nations of Sri Lanka, Maldives, Indonesia and Thailand.

The people of the Indian subcontinent have had a continuous civilization since 3300 BCE, when the inhabitants of the Indus River valley developed an urban culture based on commerce and sustained by agricultural trade.[3] The subcontinent became a hub of important trade routes, the seat of vast empires, and a centre of cultural innovation and synthesis. Hinduism, Sikhism, Buddhism and Jainism all have origins in India, while Islam, Christianity, Zoroastrianism, and Judaism have had a long and influential presence, going back to the first millenium CE. India's population, wildlife, plants, terrain, and climate are among the most diverse in the world.

Well according to this guy, Hoefstede (highly respected in Management studies by the way), cultures can be lumped into several main categories, for example: North American, European, South American and so on. However, somehow, this scholar thinks that certain nationalities have their own specificity (cannot be lumped with others).

The special cultures he mentions are: Japon, Brazil and India. In other words, he does not put Japan, nor India for that matter, as being part of an Asiatic mainstream, he believes those countries have a very particular set of beliefs that makes them apart from other more general and broad cultures. Short, and always following Hoefstede, India could not be considered Asiatic.

Yes, of course it is... the country is a part of Asia and therefore it is an Asian culture. One wouldn't say that it was Middle Eastern, European or American. At best, it could be subdivided into South Asian or subcontinental Asian as if it was it's own isolated area, and it might be cleared to say that it is Euro-Asian by practice, but by definition it is fair to say that from it's location in Asia it is Asian.

I suspect that by comparison to the other Asian cultures, however, India is quite uniquely different considering it's long history under British colonial rule and it's rapid independant national growth since it's official seperation from the English; nonetheless, Asian it is.

i stumble on it too that indian custom seems to have commonalities with east asian custom. i stumble on south asian respectful, stable kinfolk values, admire to elderly, and so on, and frequently greater mushy and nicer. my supposition is that that's as a results of buddhism... yet then some indians extremely look like center jap or caucasian. im uncertain they have the characteristics above. i in my view do no longer know south asians from this team.

In america, inidan does mean native indian or indian from south asia. The word india came to natives of america through colombus, who went on to discover inidia and went on wrong direction to discover america and named the natives as indians. So, indian culture may mean south asian or native american. one should be specific.
