The dead are frequently referred to as "the dearly departed" in funeral services. The actions of the two leading characters in this film are very heavily driven by their feelings toward dead loved ones, or their "dearly departed".
This movie is hands down the best film I've seen this year. You should check it out and then the meaning of the title will become clear.

The Departed, adapted from 2002’s Hong Kong smash Infernal ... about the meaning of life, stalking the shadows like the devil himself.
Departed is a Euphemism for a dead person.

Looking for something else I just came across a line in the Bible (a verse? I'm not really religious...)
"The one who wanders from the way of wisdom will end up in the company of the departed. "
Who knows...
I knew from before "departed" is used as "deceased". But by itself it has not much sense to call a movie like this "the dead guys".

There are many characters who "left"(departed) in the movie. Just analyze the plot of the movie.

The Departed means they either just left or are dead.

All the above are totally wrong. 'Parted' means left or gone. Therefore, 'departed' must mean returned or not gone. That's logic.
