This is due to the fact that cruise ships travel all over the world. They go to so many different ports-of-call, their passengers are always disembarking and then embarking again from these ports. People should, (but don't always), get their recommended shots by their physician that they should have before travelling because they don' think that they will be getting ill.

Many passengers are not the cleanest people and when they return from a port or a scheduled destination, they tend to pick up various illnesses that don't have any effects on them until days later. That's usually how many oversea illnesses act, they tend to hide in the body for days, with absolutely no signs of infection. Then, after maybe five days to a week, the illness or virus pops out with a sudden rash or bite looking sign, the person becomes ill instantly with devastating results. Given the fact that cruise ships are out to sea for weeks at a time, the passenger can only be treated so well by the ship's physician and stopping at another port for medical treatment isn't always the solution because some port-entry officers won't allow a vessel to enter their port if a passenger is ill. They are frightened that their cities and ports will likewise become infected. So, in that case, many are turned away. Sometimes, the physician can only treat a patient so well given the circumstances and their equipment.

Many times, the reasons why an entire cruise liner becomes infected and contaminated is because the passenger had the common decently to get infected and then pass it to all the other passengers within the cabins and suites nearby. Once they catch it, then those passengers spread the illness to whomever as well. Pretty soon, the ship is one giant outbreak of infection. Once the vessel has returned to port, those infected with a virus have to be hospitalized, while the vessel has to undergo a decomtamination scrubbing which could last for weeks and cost millions of dollars.

Just recently, however, there have been a couple cruise ships that weren't scrubbed down correctly along with some crews that weren't completely over their infection returned on board with the virus and infected more passengers.

Probably because of poor house keeping on the ships, poor keeping of food, polluted water in the storage tanks, trying to save money by not doing the cleaning correctly!
Give germs any kind of chance, and they will get ya!
Yes, i think they stuff too many people in the ships, too. You know, if you work in an office, or in close contact with others at your place of employment--you stand a good chance of having colds, upset stomach, etc., all from germs from your co-workers!
I was wounded in France, during WW II, and sent home on a Hospital Ship! On Christmas day, we were served turkey and all the things that go with it! By nine o'clock that night 3/4 of the ship was terribly sick, everybody had the diahrea and throwing up. All except one--me! I didn't eat anything but crackers!

There's always a conflict of visual reference and balance in large ships. Your semi circular canals in your ears tell you that you are moving, you eyes say not.
Result.....
Brain confused and stimulates the little nerve in your stomach and sick you will be!

A couple thousand people in a confined space. All it takes is one with the flu and in two days. Not hard to imagine.

It's due to an equilibrium in-balance in the their body (the central point is your ears) and they are not used to the constant swaying back and forth. Take Dramamine and drink ginger ale!!!
