He couldn't open the door because he was dead. It looked like he and his wife were speaking, but as you recall, he was speaking and she said simply" WHY? " ....She was talkng to herself! Same with the Mother..Watch it again and watch the interaction, and lack thereof!!

He could'nt open the door underneath his stairs cause it was blocked by a table. He wasn't talking to either women they just made it look like he was , if you notice neither woman ever answered or talked back to him.

He can't open the door because he's dead... his ghost can't open it. He might be speaking to his wife, but she can't hear him because he's dead to her. He again speaks to the boy's mother, but again, he's dead, and he believes he's having a conversation with her... and if indeed he is, then the boy's mother is dead, too!

U need to watch it again. I forget about the stairs thing. A childhood memory? If you notice the women are not really talking to him. He is talking and they look up set, just sitting there like.

Don't remember too much about the door, but I think it might have been where his stuff was. As for with talking to the wife, he talked to her, but she never answered. He thought she was angry at him. With the boys mother, I thought it was that she was just rambling to herself.

Don't worry It took me several times to watch and understand it.
He is dead. And if you watch very close that he is speaking but they can not hear him. He thinks that they are ignoring him

Don't worry about it, it was a very bad movie...which the director followed with a series of bad movies.
