I heard shaving a babies head around 1yr old helps the hair grow back more evenly, does anyone know about this?

Never heard of that, but I would not do it.

The hair will likely grow back more evenly, but you need to be concerned about the actual act of shaving the head.

Unlike you and me, baby's heads are extremely sensitive, as is their skin. They won't react well to a razor, and they will likely get cut or a severe case of razor burn by doing this to them.

The baby may also not sit still through the entire ordeal, making it difficult to impossible to finish. You really risk cutting their skin and bleeding if they move suddenly when you don't expect it.

If you're using an electric razor, the baby will likely be distracted by the noise as well, and is even less likely to sit still. Babies also have sensitive ears, so an electric razor's buzzing, something you and I may be used to, is going to be VERY loud and distracting, and will probably hurt their ears.

My recommendation is to not shave the head of a baby. Their hair will eventually start to grow in, and when it's thick and long enough, take them to a reputable barber or hairdresser who's dealt with small children before, especially if it's someone the child recognizes or knows, so they're most comfortable.

Actually yes it is true. In South American and other smaller countries they shave a babies head right after they are born. That way the hair is stronger and doesn't fall out during the babies first few months in life. If you notice here in the USA babies hair starts to fall out right in the back and start thinning out. Well, they don't have that problem over there. So they must be onto something.

I dont think this could be true... hair grows how it wants. However, newborns can lose hair in patches (like my daughter who lost some on the back of her head from turning her head back and forth so much when she was just a few mths old) so if you were to cut it all off once your baby stopped doing this then I suppose you are right in a way - the hair that grows back will be even. I had to trim my girl's hair in areas, as parts were ridiculously long and others were still short.

The babies hair will naturally even out as life progresses. I would not recommend shaving any part of your child's anatomy. However, if you don't like the uneveness of the babies hair, trim it occasionally as it grows out!

Fortunately you don't have to do anything to the baby's head of hair, it'll all grow out just fine, it's a little patchy for awhile because of the way they lay. Their hair is perfect, be patient, and it'll come in gorgeous.

Are you serious? Why in God's name would you shave a baby's head? Who gives a sh** how even his hair is? For crying out loud, let the kid be and just wait for nature to take it's course! It'll all work out, I promise!

this is very common in the Philippines. in fact, local custom is not to cut the childs hair until he turns 1 then shave his head. this is supposedly to make their hair thicker. i don't know if there's any scientific background to this but most people i know follow it anyway...at least for boys =)

I'm not sure. I thought of doing that to my 18 month old because she's nearly bald. Knowing my luck, she'd stay that way...lol. I'm not going to do it. I know that if you keep an infants hair trimmed, the hair will grow faster.
