If you use your mouth for talking to your self and don't keep stuffing high calorie foods into it that might be a path to weight loss.

It can work but basically healthy people. However anyone that is having significant symptoms of depression needs professional help. Look at it this way. If all the self help books worked that great there would no therapists. Self help books can be written by ANYONE without any training. Therapists must jump through a lot of hoops to do what we do. So if you needs a little bump in your self esteem then books are fine but if its anything more serious see a professional.

I've used self-talk, or "positive affirmation" for years and I can tell you that it is a very helpful tool. I've never used it to lose weight, since I don't have that problem, but I have used it before sporting events, and also whenever I needed to pump myself up to complete a difficult task--or even to calm myself down when I found myself getting to upset.
The brain reacts more strongly to information when it is presented in an audible form than it does from merely thinking about something. (This is also why it is always helpful to say a word or phrase out loud if you want to remember it. Or even a person's name!
Good luck with your fitness plan. I'm sure the self talk will help you achieve your goals.

Thank about it this way. If you tell yourself you are going to fail at something often enough you will. So the reverse is possible. That is also why it is important to surround yourself with people that have a positive attitude.
Now Spiritually speaking -
Proverbs 18:21. Death and life are in the power of the tongue: and they that love it shall eat the fruit thereof.
Also - In Genesis over and over it says - "and God said:" and whatever he said happened.

The self-talk cycle includes constructive motivation, performance enhancement, and improved self-image. When we talk to ourselves in a positive manner we improve our performance, which in turn, causes us to develop a positive self-image, which causes us to continue to speak to ourselves in a positive manner. This creates an upward spiral leading to success. For example, say to yourself, "Eating a proper diet and exercising regularly is easy for me and I feel great when I see the resulting weight loss." This will motivate you to eat properly and exercise. The resulting weight loss will improve your self-image and result in more positive self-talk. Unfortunately, negative self-talk will have the opposite effect, resulting in poor performance, a poor self-image, discouragement, and failure.
Is positive self-talk important, absolutely!

WHAT SELF TALK MEANS IS TALKING POSITIVE TO YOURSELF. THIS WAY YOU WILL HAVE A POSITIVE SELF IMAGE. NOTHING OTHERS TELL YOU (EXCEPT THE BAD STUFF) REALLY AFFECTS YOU. ITS WHAT YOU TELL YOURSELF THAT REALLY MATTERS. ALWAYS STAY POSITIVE AND REMEMBER THIS...IT COULD HAVE BEEN SO MUCH MORE WORSE!! BE THANKFUL FOR EVERYTHING ABOUT YOURSELF...DONT WISH FOR THINGS THAT GOD DIDNT ALREADY GIVE YOU. THERE ARE REASONS WHY YOU ARE WHO YOU ARE, AND REASONS FOR WHY YOU LOOK THE WAY YOU LOOK. DONT LOOK TO OTHERS FOR SELF VALIDATION. KEEP THE GOOD THOUGHTS COMING ABOUT YOURSELF!!!
