J.R.R. Tolkien has an entertaining "original" version of this nursery rhyme in "The Fellowship of the Ring". It seems that the Man in the Moon came down to carouse at an inn. A cat started playing the fiddle, as the night wore on toward dawn, and the Man in the Moon was "in his cups". Because of the sound of the enchanted music, cows and horses stood on their heads, and the cutlery began dancing a jig. When the fiddle-string broke, the cow jumped over the Moon. I can't recall whether the cow jumped over the Man in the Moon, who was passed out at one of the inn's tables, or whether the cow jumped over the Moon, itself, the coach that the Man in the Moon drove. If it was the Moon, it was because the Moon was parked in the inn's courtyard.

Hey diddle diddle,
The cat and the fiddle,
The cow jumped over the moon.
The little dog laughed to see such a sight
And the dish ran away with the spoon.
