All other dvds that we recently bought all work on both dvds. The new barbie one starts on the menu screen and you select something but nothing happens. Like I said it works on my other dvd player.

NOT all DVD players read DVDs the same so you can have incompatibility with some Players and DVDs.
If this DVD is working on other players then it is NOT a problem with the DVD itself. If there was a problem on the DVD it would have the same problem in every player you try it on. Therefore exchanging it at the store will not help.
If you are getting to the Main selection menu you have a couple options that MAY work for you.
1. try using the ENTER button instead of PLAY to start your selection, that usually works better.
2. If that does not work then try going to the scenes selection and pick the second scene... use ENTER button... then if it starts rewind to the start...Then play the movie... Hope one of these options work for you.

It's probably the dvd. I would return it.
