Hip-hop is the culture, rap is the music *of* the culture. Hip-hop consists of a lot of things, but the absolute essentials are DJing, MCing, hip-hop dance (especially breaking), and hip-hop art (graffiti and graffiti-inspired styles). You can listen to rap and not really be down with hip-hop style, you can dress hip-hop and not like rap, but someone who professes themself to be truly down with hip-hop will take at least a little from each area and - if not practice it - at least appreciate it for what it is.

There is not a difference between Hip Hop and Hip-Hop, as they just have a dash between them. What you need to understand is that "Hip Hop" and "Rap" are two different things. Hip Hop is the overall culture, the movement, the lifestyle, that has Rap music in it. Rap is the name, the type of the music that people involved in Hip Hop culture make. It's a very common mistake.

Hip-Hop is the good stuff that people put in with rap as someone said rap is more about the beats the video and usually has no meaning point or message. Hip-Hop is not exactly about the beat but the words and message.
ex
Hip Hop -nas(at times) tupac(same with nas) Fugees Common
Rap -lloyd banks 50 cent and most other highly flashy "artists"
Please please take my word for this and Im going to assume you thoughit was just a fancy way of saying it but its not.
And yes rap sucks (not all say like98%)
And Hip Hop is dying and needs to come back because im tired of other blacks who have this power to be heard misrepresenting all us blacks

Hip-Hop doesn't necessarily have to be rap. Rap is just rhyming with a beat, hip-hop is all the new stuff added onto either rap combined with singing or just plain singing like they rapping. Hip-Hop is a mentality. LoL. jk That would be my analysis.

Rap is something you do...As Hip-Hop is what you live...basically, rap is a form of Hip-Hop, Hip-Hop is a culture(style, attitude, slang, etc...)...

Hip-hop is about more than just catchy beats. It involves a useful message and takes at least a little more skill.

hip hop is music, (although i dont like it). rap isn't music, its a drum beat with someone talking in rhythm to the beat, with a few interspursed weird noises, and there r sometimes lots of bad situations mentioned.

I think hip-hop is the sugar coated name for rap so kids can talk their parents into letting them listen to it anyway. That's my guess....
