it sounds like you have loads of programs running in the background, check out task manager to see if there is anything to don't recognise but I would recommend rebuilding your pc to clear out any unwanted programmes, i try to do this once a year on my pc.

If you have loads of programs running in the background - messenger(s), anti virus, anti spyware, graphics drivers, etc, they all take time to shut down (approx 20s per program). You can see how many there are by looking at the quick access icons in your toolbar (bottom right of screen). You can speed things up somewhat by clicking and tying msconfig then clicking on startup and removing any unneccessary programs. These are the ones that will end up slowing down your shut down process. They are also draining valuable memory from your system as they all need a share of it and may slow down the system clock bus.

In your start menu... you can see it if you go to run type in mscongfig and see what is in your startup menu.... all that is in that list takes at least 20 seconds per input to shut down... the reason for "taking forever to shut down"... hope this helps

You probably have a load of applications running while you turn your computer off, so your computer is taking time because it needs to close off all your applications that are running before turning off. Close off all your apllications, such as Limewire, Azureus, nero etc before you click on 'turn off' computer. Hope this helps.

Along with background programs, it will be slow if you have configured it to clear browser history, cache, etc on shutdown. Mine takes about 45 sec. longer because of this.

You may well have picked up a virus! Go to CNET and down load one af their free Spyware killers.
I use "SPYBOT" and "SpyWare Doctor" from them. After you are done with them, shut the down or they too, will slow down your system. Good luck my friend!
