it has a bunch of strings like an electric guitar, but its like a keyboard, played sitting down. and i've seen solos with it in music videos. i saw one at a dave matthews concert. what is it?

Pedal steel guitar. Look for videos on Youtube that have Robert Randolph playing. Matthews has toured with him and plays on Randolph's new album. Robert Randolph & The Family Band are a lot of fun live too.
Also look for The Campbell Brothers. They play gospel music that some call Sacred Steel.
Pedal steel guitar is also used in country music. A good musician is Buddy Emmons who's been a fine player since the 60's.
