You were told wrong. Professionals charge a lot because it's not easy to open a laptop screen successfully. The cables that connect the screen to the mainboard are fragile and hard to manage. Places like Best Buy and their ilk are way overpriced but find a good local shop that won't charge a ton. Get a price up front or at least an agreement of an estimate and a no-work clause before you agree.

This idiotic mentality of "ooo mysterious piece of kit better leave it to an expert" is sickening. All these people probably don't even own a laptop and probably would tell you the same thing if you asked whether it was ok to open up a desktop.
No, nothing will happen if you open your laptop, as long as you keep yourself grounded. It'll probably prove harder than you think though, to get the thing to open. There'll be screws in odd places, but aside from that, as long as you maintain the same amount of care as you would a desktop, you'll be fine.
And when you look inside, you'll see that it's really not that different from a desktop, except that you've got strangely-shaped boards with smaller components.

it's not a good idea! laptop components are much more sensitive than pc. it's fragile and easily damage. if your laptop precious to you, send it to pro. flicker screen sometime not because of loose wire. it's also happen when your fluorescent light or circuit at the back of your lcd panel are defect. send it over for repair. don't take a silly risk.

You don't want to do that without the repair manual open and in front of you, and you know exactly what you need to do! Laptops are not made like other instruments; their innards are complex, parts tiny, cables tinier, and everything is more sensitive. Take it to a pro!

Gateway is so proprietary... if your time up for keeping things fixed for you... if the time is over that they will fix the computer for you... then by all means open it up and make sure all is connected.. if you feel comfortable with that job.... if not you might just have to put out the money to have a PC tech fix it for you..

well, if professionals arent an option, then i guess ull have to do it urself.
but then again, you have to factor in the fact that if you do it by urself, and mess it up worse, then it could cost more money to get ur laptop fixed. so, idk. that's a tough one.
do u have any friends that know anything about laptops?
