I was going up to the roof of my apartment complex when I stepped into some kind of black stuff they had placed on the floor. After I managed to get my shoes separated from the, what I can only assume to be, tar; I went downstairs and started searching the internet for advice. However, this seems to be the best place. Please help, they are a VERY good pair of shoes!

There is a product called oops you can get it at Wal-mart. Or go to any automotive store and get some tar remover like you use on cars. Also gasoline or deisel fuel works good, you just have to
be careful not to ruin your shoes depending on what kind they are,
I would say the oops would be the least harmful. If it is really thick
scrape the worst of it off and then use this with a rag. Hope this
helps, good luck.

Asphalt, Tar

Always read and follow the care instructions and any warnings on the garment label. And, follow the General Rules for stain removal.

Rub the area with ice and carefully scrape with the dull edge of a butter knife.

Saturate the area with an aersol pretreatment laundry stain remover, wait a few minutes to allow it to penetrate, then rub with a heavy duty liquid laundry detergent and launder immediately.

If the color stain remains, launder in chlorine bleach if safe for the fabric, or in all-fabric bleach. Always check for color fastness first.

For extra heavy stains, apply dry-cleaning fluid to the back of the stain over absorbent paper towels. Let it dry. Then, rinse and proceed as above. Read the product label and proceed carefully when using dry cleaning fluid

Of course this may not be the answer you are looking for if the shoes are made of leather.

I'm sorry to say you may NEVER get it off...really. My brother did roofing for awhile and tar is near to impossible to remove from ANYTHING. I know you said that they are a very good pair of shoes, but you may just have to buy a new pair. Sorry :( I know this is NOT the answer you were looking for, but at least it's the truth.
Good Luck!!

Tar is in the grease family. So try Ice to get it hard and then with a dull knife take off as much as you can. Then clean with mechanic soap .

Use a product named "Goof-Off", contains variety of organic solvents, excellent for removing paint, tar, general gradoo. It has a loud smell, so set up to use it outside, leave articles outside to dry.
