What is the weather like ? Is there lots of snow, do you need chains ? Is it too cold for kids at the South Rim ?

I personally did not drive to GC in Dec but my in-laws did on a visit here. They had major snow and had to buy chains before they could travel on. Another co-worker went around Jan and it was the same story. It's can get pretty chilly up there in the summer so winter will be very cold and if it's snowing yes.
Kids will be fine if you bundle them up. The north rim is not even an option at this time of year as they close of the path to it.
Snow here is random you can't predict it...that is how my in-laws got stuck so you could just buy some chains at wal-mart and if you don't use them return them...better safe than sorry especially w/the little ones.

I have driven there but not in December. I suggest you check the National Park service's web site for weather info.

Winter conditions on the South Rim can be extreme. Be prepared for snow, icy roads and trails, and possible road closures. Roads on the South Rim are plowed when needed. Canyon views may be temporarily obscured by fog during passing storms. Entrance fees are not refundable because of weather conditions.

It is very windy and chilly at the Grand Canyon right now in fact. I only been there once and it was pretty windy. I guess it will be freezing all the way up there in Decemeber.
