1. is it strange if you ask for a male NOT female MD? they always ask "would you prefer a female MD" but I'd actually prefer male but I'm a little embarassed to say this. Anyone else?

2. Do you use GYN for regular health care like if you have a sore throat/or flu, or if you had anxiety/depression issues? Do they get annoyed if you go to them for any other reason besides strictly GYN (assuming depression is not pregnancy related)?

thanks

I have a male OB/Gyn I have been seeing him for 20 yrs.

No I do not use them for other health care. Yes they would be annoyed if I called them for such things.

I work for a female and male OB/Gyn office. Its VERY normal that you prefer a Male over a Female. Half of our practice see's the Male M.D. and the other the Female MD. Its all a personal preference. Don;t be embarrassed! And we are the Family Doctor for many of our patients and we don;t mind at all. As a matter of fact we always tell our patients to call about ANYTHING!And if for whatever reason we cant help we will refer you to someone that can!

I work in a gyne office, and it is not weird at all to ask for a male gyne. A lot of women do this. Some women just do not feel comfortable having another woman poking around down there. Don't worry this is not unusual. The doctors at my office do get a little bit annoyed when people try to come to them for issues that aren't gyne related, although they do tend to deal alot with anxiety/depression as well. They have the ability to test in these areas because of things like postpartum depression. Many types of depression including postpartum prescribe the same drugs, so gyne doctors can prescribe these. If you have a sore throat or the flu though go somewhere else.

No, not strange at all. Gender preference is the patient's choice. Others feel that women are better because men have never experienced x, y or z, but in retrospect, the rudest, most disrespectful and incompetent gyns I've ever encountered were female. Rather than being understanding, their attitude was, "if I don't experience it, no one else could be." So, no, not strange...you request whomever you are comfy with, as is your right.

While you would not rely primarily on your Gyn for any of the issues you mentioned, it is important for him or her to be aware of your entire health history for continuity of care. For example, if you were being treated by your primary care doc for a flu with certain medication, or being given certain meds by your pyschiatrist, your Gyn needs to know this to a.) be appraised of your whole health picture and b.) perhaps more importantly, be well advised of what treatments you are on to avoid giving you contraindicated meds for something else he or she might be treating you for. You would typically present to your primary care doc for anything outside of reproductive healthcare, but definately keep your Gyn in the loop.

Good luck and best wishes.

1. My GYN was assigned to me by the clinic that took my new insurance. He is the head of OB/GYN at our local university. He is very down to earth and I have continued to see him for a number of years. He is my preference.

2. No, He is too busy for that. I also have an excellent primary care doctor.

Just find a good doctor that you feel comfortable with.

Do not feel embarrassed requesting a male OB/GYN. This is very common and people expect it (they should also be professional enough not to judge you!)?

I would not encourage you to use your OB/GYN for general health issues; you are likely to annoy him. If you feel your issue is related to his field, by all means bring it up.

Good luck!

I prefer a male docter so I dont think its weird. I see my regular doctor for my pap so I see him for everything else. If you go to a regular ob/gyn then you would see someone else for sicknesses.
