The smallest sport bike from Yamaha ever is probably the YSR50, a road racer that almost looks like a pocket bike but isn't. They have the YBR125 over in England; it's a fairly small sport/standard bike that looks kind of interesting:

The smallest street bikes they make now and sell in the US are the Virago 250 cruiser and the TW200 dual purpose bike. The XT225 is also a pretty small street bike. Those three are all good choices if you want something small and easy to manage for a beginner. Unfortunately they don't bring their small sport bikes into the US; the FZ6 may be their smallest, but it's still a bit too big an engine for me to recommend if you want small for its beginner friendliness. 90 hp, and most magazines complain it doesn't deliver that very smoothly. Their 600's are all a bit too much for someone with little or no riding experience, although they're very fun choices for someone who's already mastered controlling a bike and wants something light and tossable.
