I just barely started my party planning business and my first client is a friend of a friend and it's a one year old's b-day party (clifford themed). She and I will be talking about budget tonight and I still have no idea what to charge. I have a lot of experience and am known for being extremely creative - so she won't be getting a basic balloon and clown show.

She'll have hand made invitations, and it's going to be a big event.
What do I charge since I still need to make a name for myself? Hourly or rated? Please help. Thanks!

I wouldn't normally start a business without this kind of important detail hammered out - but my best friend told her that I was getting something together and she pounced on it. She knows I haven't officially "started" yet.

Look at other event planners websites to get an idea on what to charge but since she is your first client you need to charge a little less until you build a portfolio of you work. Take pictures of your parties in order to build a great portfolio and get testimonials.

How can you start a business without knowing rates? Good things you're starting with a friend of a friend.
