2. the drive has 1000x of MP3s and WMAs
3. want to connect to shelf-stereo system or boombox that has usb port built-in ( i don't own either of those but plan to buy...)
4. will the shelf-system allow me to access music files on external HDD to play via the shelf-systems amp&speakers?

I don't think it will work. A PC system is to be configured.I can give you a link that deals with hard drive problems. Some hard drive problems can be easily fixed yourself by using easily available tools. I found the info at http://fixit.in useful

Won't work uless you route through regular PC and not just the external HDD.
