I have a 2002 C240 and when I bought the car the salesman told me the seats were leather. I've recently been told that they are not real leather but some sort of plastic/vinyl. Is that true?

Mercedes only does two types of upholstery...leather, and MB-Tex. MB-Tex is Mercedes' leather-alternative for those who want a skinnier price tag. While it's possible you have leather, it's also possible that you have the leather imitation MB-Tex. If you still have the dealer sticker or reference card, you should be able to reference that.

Mercedes does have a form of leather that is not 100% leather. It is much nicer than any other opponents fakes and thats why people don't know the difference.

Check the trim code at any MB dealership. Leather is an option on C-Class Benzes.

Do the lighter test!
Light up a lighter, let the flame lick the leather (choose a hidden spot if possible, so that if it burns, it's not so noticible).

Genuine Leather licked by flame will be stable, while plastic leather will melt.

Good luck! Attempt with adult supervision.

Its leather! MB doesn't use plastic on seat coverings. Unless you bought it used and they used to be cloth seats redone by the previous owner. Keep your A & B services regular and the car will last a long time.

Maybe the previous owners had the seats redone. Check this out...http://msnbc.msn.com/id/6930506/ this could be a possibility.
