That odor makes me sneeze uncontrollably, so I spent a long time trying to figure out how to get rid of it. Not just mask it! I have tried everything. These are the two things that work. Massive amounts of bleach, which completely destroys the towels. Or Ammonia. If the smell is really bad you can add a few cups, but typically you only need 1 to 2 cups of ammonia per load. Do not buy scented ammonia, the scent will not wash out. and DO NOT mix ammonia and bleach as the reaction kills humans. I know the ammonia stinks going into the wash, but it completely washes out, I promise.

Depending on what the smell is caused by, soak in Arm and Hammer Washing Soda (you'll find it in the laundry soap section of the store) for a while before washing then add soda to the load with your detergent.

If it is white try hydrogen peroxide. I have used white vinegar in the past, but they were kids towels for the pool and I didn't really care what happened to them. Also Tide makes a new detergent with Febreze in it. We use it all the time. It smells great.

wash it with pleasant smelling detergent and then you might use some fabric softener. and when you dry it try some bounce dryer sheets and if all this doesn't work i suggest spraying it with some fabreeze (like the comericals)

You might try a soak in vinegar, or adding febreze for clothes to the wash cycle.
