Prude Lesbo, no need to be rude. I was asking what the history is of it!! God, i think my next question should be, "why do lesbians hate straight women!!"

Judy garland was associated with being gay because the gay flag was a rainbow not the opposite way around. The people who said representation of diversity were correct. Incidently, pink was also supposed to be in the gay flag but when they initially came to print it out they had run out of the correct ink to incorporate it in the design so they missed it out. It stayed like that ever since.
For the record, not all lesbians hate straight women or men but we do cringe at the 'lesbian feminists' who simply have a bad attitude and think the can behave however they like cos their 'special'. They give real lesbians a bad reputation! I'm sure there are genuine feminists out there who feel the same way!!

I got asked this question at work the other day and answered in the heat of the moment that it might be something to do with July Garland and her status as gay icon (think - 'Somewheeeeeere Over the Rainbowww' - no idea either...). My questioner subsequently found out that it is tied in with the Stonewall era (when the gay movemet found its voice and rioted over some poor policing in New York). I assume that it is linked to the idea that there is diversity in purity and strands of difference can be included in a pure oneness.
Best question on Y!A so far for me! Well done!

To illustrate the diversity of the Rainbow Flag and all it stands for, just compare and contrast the two styles of answer, one from the ever polite, charming and informative IndyT and the other from Prude Lesbo. Q.E.D.!

This is just my opinion, but I'm sure that other brothers and sisters can clarify it some more.
The rainbow(to me)represents diversity as a whole and most of us in the LGBT community appreciate it and embrace it fully(although there can be some bad batches, but hey!). I personally dig the "rainbow connection".

the rainbow represents the unity and diversity within the glbt community........also fyi the pink triangle is used as a sign og respect for the homosexuals the nazis killed. in concentration camps a pink triangle was sewn onto their uniforms, singling them out for special torture (i know its not in history books) there is a whole wall in the holocoust musuem in washington dc dedicated to these victims, including some of the original patches.

The gays hijacked the rainbow from the anti-racist movement. It used to be a symbol of tolerance among the races but the gays just hijacked it for themselves.

It started from Jesse Jackson's use of it in his liberal party's Rainbow Coalition. Since it was originally used to unite all people that are disenfranchied and unheard in American Politics, the gays decided to continue the use of the Rainbow.

The Rainbow Flag reminds us that ours is a diverse community - composed of people with a variety of individual tastes of which we should all be proud.

It stands for beauty and tolerance. A rainbow has many colors and though each color is beautiful on its own, the beauty that stands out when they are all joined together!
