For a wet cough:
Most importantly, NO DAIRY PRODUCTS!! Dairy can make phlegm thicker which in turn makes it harder to cough up. Drink lots of clear liquids (water, broth, Crystal Light). This will help thin out your mucus and make it easier to cough up. Have a cup of coffee! Caffeine is a natural bronchi-dilator, which means that it stimulates the tiniest parts of your lungs to open up and get more oxygen. Take a HOT shower and sit in the steam. Steam will also help you breathe easier. Take a multivitamin-your body can heal itself quicker if it has all the right tools. Finally try some Zinc, the kind that you spray up your nose. It may be a bit awkward but it really cuts down on the number of days you are ill.

What kind of cough do you have? If its one with phlegm...I would suggest you gargle frequently with salt water...this helps me a lot...and then put your shower on hot so the bathroom steams up aand sat in the bathroom for about 10 -15 minutes then lie facedown on your bed with your head and chest hanging off the bed and have someone pat your back for 15 minutes....you will feel so much better because all the phlegm will come out...it will make you cough but once it's over you will feel fantastic...just make sure you have something to spit the phlegm in because a lot will come out...and also suck on some cough drops...too much cough medicine just lessens the cough not really taking care of the problem itself...hope you feel better
