As of September 12, 2006, the Department of State warned U.S. citizens to defer non-essential travel to Syria.

Americans in Syria should exercise caution and take prudent measures to maintain their security. These measures include being aware of their surroundings, avoiding crowds and demonstrations, keeping a low profile, varying times and routes for all required travel, and ensuring travel documents are current.

Sure it is safe for you to go to Syria if you are American or not. Syria has one of the friendliest people on the planet. They wont hurt you, even if you have a different political view. As for crime rate, Syria is one of the safest countries in the world, people can leave their shop exposed open alone for 2 hours and nothing would happen to it.

Much more so than you would think. I have visited a number of countries that might be thought of as hostile to the US since 9/11, and the reception has been universally good. You would be amazed, particularly in Muslim countries, at the value that their culture places on hospitality. They are more likely to invite you into their home for a meal than they are to say a word against you.

If I read about you in the news, you will be one of the people I don't feel sorry for.

If you have something specific to do there, different story - you have to do what you have to do.

I don't think it's a hospitality issue or that they would invite you into their home! They hate you as an American with a passion but they still want your AMERICAN dollars! Believe me, the beheadings you see on TV are REAL!!! They don't put you to sleep first either! LOTS OF LUCK!!!! Watch out for the head hunters!!! I was in Eygpt that is supposed to be "American Friendly"! HA, HA Don't bet your boots!
