If you look closely, the media IS saying Kim Jong Il. A capital 'I' and a lowercase 'l' look exactly like the same letter when typed with certain fonts. Short of typing his name like this...Kim Jong IL, which is not correct, what else are they to do?

They are right. His name is Kim Jong Ill and his father's name was Kim Il Sung.
