2. Correct European answer: The Vikings. There is solid archeological evidence that they spent time on the east coast of Canada long before CC.

Lots of people would say, it wasn't lost!
But a standard answer for a long time has been Columbus, and I still think that is the right answer.
Yes, there were Vikings from Iceland on the north coast of Canada before Columbus, and there were other groups that have been suggested as having "discovered" America. But I think that Columbus is the right answer because before he made it to the Caribbean, no one around the world knew that North and South America existed, and after Columbus made his voyages, everyone heard about it and immediately started checking it out.
Columbus was the dividing line between the outside world not knowing vs knowing. So I think that qualifies him as the discoverer.

Good question Gene...Christopher Columbus crashed into what we now call America in an attempt to find a passage to the east. America was actually named after Amerigo Vespucci, another explorer.
