Recent GI research has shown that lactobacillus in pill form or in yogurt form improves the outcomes of patients with even inflammatory bowel disease! It helps irritable bowel disease, a functional bowel problem. Importantly, lactobacillus taken while using antibiotics will help to reestablish normal gut flora, and prevents c. difficile colitis, which is a terrible form of diarrhea that can lead to loss of ones gut.. Lactobacillis is a normal bacteria which lives in the colon and vagina. It is good to replenish our bodies with this beneficial bacteria.

Good--and safe--to have every day. Yes, yoghurt has some in it, but to ingest the appropriate amount of acidophilis to give you benefit, you would have to consume more yoghurt than you'd probably be prepared to. The best (purest and most potent)strains of acidophilis are usually found in health food stores in either liquid or powdered forms. I've never heard of anyone o.d.ing on it. The digestive system thrives on it. The very best use of it is (besides regular use to maintain healthy conditions in the bowel system ) is when you, for whatever reason, are taking antibiotics. Antibiotics kill the bad stuff but also the good stuff. Acidophilis replaces the good bacteria and keeps you from getting all kinds of bad reactions brought on by extended use of antibiotics.

There's no need to cut back. Acidophilus is perfectly safe to take everyday and in fact it is recommended that you do take it daily. I've been taking it daily for about a year now with no problems. If you think you're getting enough from your diet, then cut back, but most of us don't. For normal maintenance, you should be taking about 1-5 billion Colony-Forming Units or CFU (it'll state on the bottle how much it contains).

Like anything, good in moderation. Probiotics are good for the body, they help with food absorbtion and a host of other things. I dont know how much you are taking, I think my pills say to take 2 a day, and I drink kefir everyday too.

Acidophilus can be found in some quality yogurts and other traditional foods naturally. Even though, too much of anything is potentially harmfull. I would cut back to about every other day.

You can take acidophius if you experience any of the following problems:
Thrush
Yeast diaper rash
Vaginal yeast infection
Diarrhea
Yeast infection .
WHEN TO TAKE IT
I suggest you begin acidophilus at the start of any of the above problems, as well as when taking antibiotics. Continue taking it for one week after the problem or antibiotic is finished.
